You're Never Too Old (To Volunteer!)

By: Mary Beth Volmer President - Friends of Plum & Pilot Islands

Friends often ask me why I volunteer for a place that takes me 5-1/2 hours to reach.  By the time I tell them all the reasons, they’re ready to request a refill of their drink (coffee, that is).  Volunteering gives us an opportunity to explore our interests and give back - a double dose of satisfaction.

For 91-year-old volunteer, Pete LeMere has been able to apply his interests in the outdoors by volunteering to crew on our charter boat, The Shoreline and work on the Lambeau Field (home of the Green Bay Packers) clean-up crew.  This crew meets after each home game to pick up the game day trash and earn money for the restoration work we do on the islands.  Pete, who attended his first game in 1948, was recently interviewed by Green Bay TV station WBAY (‘Go Pack Go’: 91-year-old Packers fan still serves on stadium cleanup crew).

Pete noted:  “I’m on the Lambeau Field cleanup with Friends of Plum and Pilot Island … We get together, we clean up, we have fun talking.  It’s just fun to do.”

If you’re interested in joining the clean-up crew, or learn of other volunteer opportunities, send us an email at: friendsofplumandpilot@gmail.com.
