Preventing Invasive Species

As Plum Island opens for public hiking for the year, we want to talk about invasive species.

Did you know, invasive species are spread primarily by human activities, often unintended?

People—and even goods transported over land, water, and air—travel quickly around the world, and often carry uninvited species with them. Invasive species can be introduced to an area by ship ballast waterfirewood, accidental release, and by people.

At Plum Island, invasive plant species often hitch a ride on your boots and clothes.

With a new boot brush station right off the dock at Plum Island, we invite visitors to clean their boots before and after their visit.

This station was provided by a grant from the North American Invasive Species Management Association (NAISMA). For more information, visit playcleango.org
